my boyfriend has a liquor store and he’s building a walk in cigar room (13ft x 7ft) .. do the walls have to have insulation in them like any other room you build? or is it different for a cigar room?

both gentlemen are very right, a walk in humidor is almost space aged. You should insulate it, however , an air space of about 3 inches is required between insulation and the cedar, redwood or almond wood, whatever you choose for the interior, this allows venting and climate control functions. glass entry’s are not only cost effective and show casing. but very efficient as a controlled environment entry way. Industrial doors can be set to close fast enough to prevent humidity and temp from dropping too quickly.
what ever rout he takes he should choose the right contractor for the job……TIP…. after you have 2 or 3 contractors in mind “who are right for the job” hit the phone book and call about 10 other contractors just to ask about your selected builders, Contracting is a competitive business, you’ll get the dirt on your choices, I.E. over charging, milking money ect. Or if they do good work and treat their clients well. hope this helps.

insulation has to help stop the transfer of air, also will add a feeling of heightened pleasure, because of the quietness.

What makes a cigar room different is that the temperature and humidity are controled to keep the cigars fresher longer. Insulating the room would save on utiliies, and make the rest of the store more comfortable.

PETER HAS THE RIGHT ANSWER. I HAVE A GLASS HUMIDOR ON MY TABLE AND IT IS A SEAL TIGHT LID TO KEEP THE CIGARS FRESH AND NOT ALLOW THEM TO DRY OUT

I he’s insulating it, consider spray-in foam insulation. This would completely seal the room allowing him complete enviromental control of the temperature, humidity and ventilation. Plus if the store is located within another structure there will be no complaints of leakage to adjacent businesses. Try BioBase Systems their insulation is soy derived it’s safe and green.

I strongly recommend that he look at plans for any humidor room. The wood is specific, the humidity equipment is specific, everything about it is very unique since it is a rigorously climate-controlled room. My guess is that the insulation is the least of his worries–protecting the cigars is the utmost importance.
