I was given a pretty nice Rocky Patel cigar that i would like to hang onto for a bit, but i do not have a humidor. Are their any cheap ways to achieve this task?

Do NOT freeze it and if you do follow the methods where you place a wetted paper towel, be EXTREMELY careful. Overhumidifying is just as bad as allowing the cigar to dry out – it can cause mold. At the very least, it will be a difficult cigar to smoke as the tobacco will be wet.
If you are going to keep it for a week or less, and the cigar is in good shape to beging with, double bag it in Ziplock baggies sucking the air out of both will help. Keep them in a dark place and in a fairly warm room. Otherwise the damp paper towel method will work, but again, do NOT saturate it or even get it too wet……

when keeping a cigar fresh it’s all about keeping the tobacco wet. freezing takes water OUT of the item. . .
Hence, why cigar afficianodos will have a humidifier to keep their stogies fresh. This can be anything from an old cigar box to much more devious items. I have a cedar wood box that I keep a “humidifier” in. All I have to do is replenish it with water every so often.
I would take that Patel and put it in a ziplock bag. In that bag put a paper towel that has been lightely wetted down. Keep the stogie in its wrapper!!!!! If out of the wrapper put either the wet paper towel OR the cigar in saran wrap (preference being to the paper towel in wrap!!!!)
It won’t stay for long – but could stay fresh up to a month or so . . .

My best advice is buy shorter cigars. I havea friend who gets the mail order samplers and gives me the occaisional tree trunk to smoke. My preference is for shorter cigars.
The paper towel thing sounds good. If there is a tobacconist near you you can buy a pipe tobacco refresher. its a disk about the diameter of a quarter and three times as thick, full of holes and filled with absorbent material. soak it in water…or rum, or whiskey or ??? and toss it in with your pipeweed and it stays moist. Works on cigars too.

Surfabilly’s right. I once used a tupperware container with a damp paper towel. Kept the cigars fresh for about a month.

    Freeze it.
