Knife – No. You’ll end up hacking it to pieces.
Scissors – Yes. Depending on how wide the cigar is. Hold it horizontally and snip the end off. Straight through the end.
    Don’t use a stanley knife.
As the above answerer said, poking a hole through the middle of the end is a good idea too.
I’ll take all the thumbs down I can get from all you daft Yanks – you’ll never smoke a real Cuban. Unlucky.

Unless you have a knife,a pair of scissors or a set of teeth that are able to cut like a razor, don’t bother. If you have a new cutter blade, use that,if not, carefully poke a toothpick into the butt end of the cigar, slightly of center and at an angle, twist it a couple of times and then remove the toothpick, repeat this again at a slightly different angle. You can do this three times, without mashing the end of the cigar and you will have a smooth draw on the cigar.

They can be but the idea behind a cigar cutter is to get a good clean cut that will maximize the surface area in your mouth for smoke intake. Using a knife or scissors will smash the end which will allow less smoke and also compromise the wrapping of the cigar so you get bits of tobacco in your mouth. But yes, it is possible. There are also cigar punches that will just punch a hole in the butt of the cigar so you could try doing that with your knife.

The Royalty section is certainly a good place to post this question…especially as it pertains to the niceties of smoking a good cigar…which are so expensive now that one must nearly be Royalty to afford them!
If you have found that you enjoy smoking cigars so much that you have purchased a box of them, go ahead and buy a cigar cutter…
It seems nearly sacrilegious to hack on a fine cigar with knives or scissors. Considering how many people have quit smoking over the past few years, one ought to be able to find a very good second-hand cigar cutter for a quite reasonable price at a resale shop, tag sale, or bring and buy sale.
As long as one is going to indulge in a Royal extravagance, one might as well have all the appurtenances
Edward VII is seen to be smoking cigars in many photographs…also the last Tsar, George V, and many other Royals of that generation. I believe Queen Mary, wife of George V, also was quite fond of tobacco.

  5. The Dark Side says:

Cigar shops will always be able to sell you a plastic-cased but very adequate cigar cutter VERY cheaply – certainly for less than the price of one cigar. You need its thin sharp blade not to squash the end as a knife or scissors will, and all that happens then is as you smoke, the squashed cut end starts to unravel – not nice. You need a clean slice through the cap of the cigar. That’s why a stanley knife is the best alternative, or just making a hole in the end. Enjoy!

  6. Herfnerd says:

Unless you have an extremely sharp knife or something like an X-acto or razor blade, I wouldn’t try it – don’t even bother with scissors.
You could also use your teeth to carefully pry the cap off – don’t try to bit like in the movies.

  7. Jolly Green Giant says:

Yes but the end may splinter if the knife isnt sharp enough and you get tobacco in your mouth when you smoke. Use a pen or pencil to make a hole in the end instead.

  8. Bonzo says:

You would be better off making the hole bigger with something. Scissors/Knife can make the outer leaf start dissembling…

  9. cannonbo says:

I wouldn’t use scissors it will crush the cigar as your cutting. Use something like a brand new stanley blade for a clean cut.

  10. cafegrou says:

I wouldn’t use the scissors, but like the other guy said, use a sharp blade such as a Stanley.

  11. TRUTH Speaker says:

yes they can and one can also bite the end off before ya light up

  12. Save your tickets Ride a carnie says:

You’ve obviously never smoked weed before…..pathetic.
